, when the car crossed into the path of an oncoming Toyota Landcruiser about 1.06pm on Sunday.

His pregnant wife, aged 35, was in the front passenger seat and was ******* instantly, as was her 60-year-old mother in the back.

Her baby did not survive, a family friend confirmed with 7NEWS.com.au.

“For reasons unknown, the vehicle travelled onto the incorrect side of the road and made impact with a Toyota Landcruiser travelling in the opposite direction,” Acting Inspector Mitch Benson said.

“Unfortunately, as a result of that ******, two female persons have been tragically *******.”

The two male drivers were flown to Townsville Hospital, both in a critical condition.

Another man and two women in the Landcruiser suffered a range of non-life-threatening injuries.

Benson said there had been “fairly significant weather” with rain and water on the road at the time of the accident, which will form part of their investigation.
