with IGN in June of last year, before the game’s release, Howard discussed the vastness of the game’s universe and how it’s designed to keep players exploring for a long time.

Unicorn moments in this context refer to the interviewer sharing with Howard about a moment in Oblivion where one of their best memories of the game was randomly finding an actual unicorn in the forest.

The interviewer then proceeded to ask Howard if there are more such magical or wondrous moments in the game, to which Howard replied by saying:

There’s a good number. There’s a lot. I don’t want to spoil what they are, but yeah, of course. We love that stuff. And we have some really, really special ones in this game that I think… I’m very curious to see how long after the game is out that people discover it.

Although, after almost a year of release, it’s safe to say that there actually aren’t all that many such amazing ‘unicorn moments’ in the game.

Howard also talked about the long-term vision for Starfield. He emphasized that the game was built to stand the test of time, much like Bethesda’s previous titles like Skyrim and Fallout. 

Howard believes that the more players invest in the game, the more the game will give back to them. This concept ties back to the ‘unicorn moments,’ as players who spend more time exploring and experimenting within the game are more likely to stumble upon these rare events that would be some of their best memories of the game.

The game director mentioned that while the main storyline is significant, the game was designed in a way that allows players to pursue their own adventures. The game offers a vast menu of options, and players can choose how they want to experience the universe.

Whether they follow the main quest or venture off to explore distant planets, the game is supposed to ensure that there’s always something new to discover.

Howard’s comments in this interview might not seem very accurate or have aged very well, given the lack of great content, genuine exploration, and ‘unicorn moments’ in the game, but maybe the upcoming yearly expansions could transform the game similar to Fallout 76.
