Nobuo Uematsu will compose the main theme for Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy’s final game

Nobuo Uematsu has agreed to compose the main theme for the third game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy.

Uematsu is most famous for composing the soundtracks for the first nine Final Fantasy games, and working on numerous subsequent entries.

Although Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth contain soundtracks created by different composers, Uematsu still composed the main theme for both games – ‘Hollow’ for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and ‘No Promises to Keep’ for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Although Uematsu has recently been talking about his career nearing its end, however, he has agreed on camera to finish the set and compose the main theme for the as-yet untitled third game in the trilogy.

In a new conversation posted on the

, Uematsu discusses Rebirth with the game’s creative director Tetsuya Nomura and writer Kazushige Nojima.

After discussing the making of No Promises to Keep, Nomura asks Uematsu to commit to composing the theme for the third game.

“Since you worked on the first and second game in the series, it stands to reason that you have to come back for the third,” Nomura says.

“Not that we’ve made it official yet, but I’d like to believe you’re a lock for the next title? You’ll do it, right?

Uematsu laughs, so Nomura reiterates: “Again, this isn’t an official statement or offer. Just a gentleman’s agreement, maybe? You will come back for the third game, right?

“It’d be my honour,” Uematsu replies.

“Are you up for the challenge, though?” Nomura asks. “[It’s] going to be hard to surpass the songs you’ve already composed for us. What are you going to do?

“For starters,” Uematsu jokes, “I’m going to take a vacation.”

In an interview in February, Uematsu said he doesn’t think he’ll be able to compose an entire game’s soundtrack ever again.

“As far as Final Fantasy is concerned, I’m still involved by writing the main themes for the games,” he told ******* publication

. “But I don’t think I’ll compose music for a whole game again.

“You would have to give it full throttle for two or three years. And I don’t think I have the physical and mental strength to do it anymore.”

In the latest video, Uematsu says he had a “sense of finality” about his Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth theme, No Promises to Keep, and that he was “satisfied” with what he had made.

“Of course, it’s great to see new people giving this series their all and making great games, but I was happy to get back in the saddle and contribute again,” he explains.

“In 10, 20 years, when it’s my time to go, I’ll look back on this moment with tears in my eyes.”
