As kids growing up in Western Australia decades ago, when interstate television all but ignored the Big State, much of what we heard about “Australia” was like a foreign country.

The Harbour Bridge may as well have been the Eiffel Tower. The Opera House, as familiar as the Guggenheim. Don’t even start me on the Snowy Mountains, a concept as confusing as watching an ********* white Christmas on the telly.
