Η Νάπολι προκρίθηκε στον 2ο γύρο του κυπέλλου Ιταλίας μετά από μια έντονη αναμέτρηση με τη Μόντενα. Το παιχνίδι έληξε ισόπαλο χωρίς γκολ και πήγε στα πέναλτι, όπου ο τερματοφύλακας της Νάπολι, Μερέτ, έδωσε τη νίκη στην ομάδα του αποκρούοντας τρεις εκτελέσεις. Ο αγώνας έγινε στο στάδιο “Ντιέγκο Μαραντόνα” μπροστά σε μια μεγάλη εξέδρα, και τα πεναλτι αποτέλεσαν την απόλυτη απόφαση λόγω της φετινής προκήρυξης. Η Νάπολι παρουσίασε μια άνοστη επίθεση λόγω των απουσιών ορισμένων παικτών και φάνηκε να αντιμετωπίζει δυσκολίες στη δημιουργία ευκαιριών.
