Michael Usher experiencing a buzz with Logie nomination for best news presenter

Being nominated for a Logie is a “pinch-me” moment for 7News anchor Michael Usher in a career in which he’s already living out some of his childhood dreams.

Usher, who grew up in Perth and has spent time as a foreign correspondent and anchor of various bulletins during a storied career, is up for best news presenter.

He told The Sunday Times this week he grew up loving TV.

“I’m a classic example of a **** who grew up in the TV generation,” Usher said.

Like many Perth kids for generations, he was an avid **** Cat fan. He recalls being “obsessed” with the Channel 7 children’s show’s colouring competitions.

“I wouldn’t let Dad and Mum post them in so I asked them to drive me to the Channel 7 studios at the old Tuart Hill site and drop them directly at the security gate so **** Cat would get them!” Usher said.

Usher re-joined Seven in 2016, and since then has worked on a variety of programs and reported from across the world, fulfilling dreams that started in regional WA.

“I remember being glued to the TV during the school holidays in Mandurah, especially the news, and that’s when I knew I wanted to be one of those *********** TV correspondents who goes around the world telling stories for the news back home,” he said.

“I got to chase that dream and ended up doing so much more in the world of TV news and public affairs.”

The Western *********** Academy of Performing Arts graduate admits the nomination created “quite a buzz” for him.

“Starting as overnight news camera helper at Channel 7, then becoming a journalist and travelling the world, to now nominated for a Logie for a **** who used sit on the family couch watching the Logies in awe,” he said.

“This is a very special honour for me.”

The 64th TV Week Logie Awards are presented on Sunday August 18, and broadcast on Channel 7 and 7+, with voting open until 5pm WA time on the day.
