Newborn Owen Martens tips scales weighing as much as two-month-old to break Rockingham Hospital record

Rockingham General Hospital welcomed its biggest baby in 11 years when baby Owen came into the world weighing as much as the average two-month-old.

Owen surprised his parents Jamie Martens and Kim Allender — as well as midwifery staff — when he entered the world weighing a whopping 5.74kg (12 pounds 6 ounces).

He came into the world on Friday, July 19, at 11.36pm via C-section to become the biggest baby born at the hospital since 2013.

“I just remember the whole theatre going off when they pulled him out,” Ms Allender said.

“Everyone was guessing how big he’d be beforehand but none of us were close.

“We thought he would be 4.1kg — 4.6kg max.”

Ms Allender tracked well through pregnancy but was told at 36 weeks Owen was ******* than expected.

“My OB (obstetrician) said it was the biggest baby she’d ever delivered,” she said.

“I remember thinking ‘thank **** we went for the C-section’.”

According to the *********** Institute of Health and ********, most full-term ******* weigh between 2.5kg and 4.4kg (about 5 to 9 pounds) when they are born.

Owen had a short stay in the neonatal ward to ensure his feeds would maintain his weight but is now home with his mum and dad.

“The nursery team has been amazing with helping him keep up with feeding,” Ms Allender said.

Owen skipped the newborn clothing stage and stepped right into wearing 000 clothes.

Ms Allender and Mr Martens thanked maternity staff, especially those in the labour ward, who supported them through Owen’s birth.

“Even though I ended up having a C-section, it was a really positive experience,” Ms Allender said.

“The midwives were all really lovely; they kept me very informed and let me make my own choices.”
