Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, from private to public playground

When the great pagoda at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew was built in 1762 it was the tallest freestanding structure in England, and remained so for many years.

The 50m-high tower, a replica of a pagoda in Nanjing, China, was a gift for Princess Augusta, mother of King George III, who founded a four-hectare garden for exotic plants here from 1759.
