Australia add two silvers and a bronze to medal haul

MORE MEDALS IN AT AUSTRALIA’S RECORD-BREAKING OLYMPICS

*********** MEDALLISTS

SILVER

* Matt Richardson (cycling, men’s sprint). The *********** put up a brave ****** against Dutch master Harrie Lavreysen, but fell short of claiming an upset gold.

* Maddison Keeney (diving, women’s 3m springboard). The 28-year-old from Perth was rapt to receive her silver from one her heroes, Oscar-winning actress and IOC member Michelle Yeoh.

BRONZE

* Tom Green/Jean van der Westhuyzen (K2 1000m). The Tokyo sprint kayak gold medallists Tom Green and Jean van der Westhuyzen had to settle for bronze in the K2 in Paris.

OTHER HEADLINE GOLD MEDALLISTS

* Algerian boxer Imane Khelif wins gold in the women’s 66kg final after spending the Games in the headlines after some queried her eligibility or falsely claimed she was a man.

* Spain pipped France for men’s football gold, striking twice in extra-time for a dramatic 5-3 victory.

* The ******* States’ star-packed 4x100m women’s relay team won gold but their male compatriots botched their equivalent race – disqualified after a woeful first change and remain without an Olympic medal in the event for two decades.

WHAT ELSE HAPPENED

* Australia’s women’s beach volleyball pair of Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy missed out on a bronze medal, beaten in straight sets.

* Breaking made its Olympic debut but Australia’s b-girl Rachael Gunn, aka Raygun, fired blanks and lost all three of her battles.

* Australia’s women’s golfer Hannah Green carded a superb 66 to move up the leaderboard: she’ll start the final six shots shy of the leader and four behind the bronze-medal position.

WHO SAID WHAT?

“It’s everything. Coming from kind of the bottom of the barrel around 2020, 2021, missing out on the Tokyo Games (through injury). But it’s made me a better person, a better athlete and I’ve re-fallen in love with the sport.” Australia’s Keeney.

“We’re kind of doing the old switcheroo here, the Aussie going to France instead of the French going to Australia.” *********** diver Cassiel Rousseau, whose grandfather won a track cycling gold for France at the 1956 Olympics.

“We would have loved to come here and get the gold again but we’ll live to ****** another day and coming back home with the ****** gold isn’t too bad.” Jean van der Westhuyzen after winning bronze in the K2 sprint kayak.
