What to Watch: Guy Montgomery, Bad Monkey, Critical Incident and Emily In Paris

Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling BeeWednesday, 8.30pm, ABC

It’s been a while since ABC has taken a punt on something new.

This Wednesday sees not one but two wholly original concepts making their debut at the national broadcaster.

First cab off the rank is Shaun Micallef’s new chat show (see the sidebar for more info), followed by this hilarious new quiz format, from the twisted mind of NZ comedian Guy Montgomery.

It’s based on a comedy concept that Montgomery first brought to audiences as a festival show and was later developed into a series for New Zealand TV.

Now it’s our turn — and something tells us it will be a hit here, too.

Essentially it’s a spelling bee, but not as you know it.

Montgomery has assembled a group of very funny comedians — including Aaron Chen, who pops up as his hilariously offbeat co-host — who compete in rounds, each with the goal of spelling things correctly.

So far, so ‘i before e’, right?

Not quite: each round has a twist, or an obscure premise, and some of the words Montgomery (who’s clad in spectacular 70s garb for each ep) picks are fiendishly hard.

Local comedians popping up this season include Urzila Carlson, Tom Gleeson, Pete Helliar, Tim Minchin and Wil Anderson, each a big enough name to NOT have to do a quiz like this, which gives you an idea of how great this is. They’re clearly in it for the gags and the cred.

This is fabulously good fun and worth seeking out.

If you’re a fan of Carl Hiassen’s cult ****** classic, you’ll be keen to check out this TV reimagining, with Nineties star Vince Vaughn front and centre as former detective Andrew Yancy. Vaughn is also an executive producer, alongside Bill Lawrence, the man responsible for comedy hits Ted Lasso and Scrubs — this gives you an idea of the tone of this offbeat series. Features a great cast including Michelle Monaghan, Jodie Turner-Smith and Zach Braff, who pops up as a guestie.

This locally produced series stars Simone Kessell and Erik Thomson along with relative newcomers Akshay Khanna and Zoe Boe, and is billing itself as a gripping psychological ****** drama “inspired by real-life experiences in Australia’s juvenile justice system”. It’s all about a senior constable (Khanna) who is investigated after a bystander is critically injured while he’s pursuing a suspect. A devastating chain of events ensues. This has some powerhouse performances — one to watch.

With a series at SBS and this new chat-show format, Shaun Micallef is Mr Everywhere on TV right now — not that that’s a bad thing. This sees him back at the ABC asking two celebrity guests the same question: what two possessions would they save in the event of a hypothetical disaster? According to the ABC, the series finale has a twist “that brings into doubt everything that has come before” — we’re not sure what this means, but consider us intrigued.

We’re back in Paris, and quelle surprise! Emily’s life is still a hot mess. In fact, it might just be more tangled than ever. What with her love triangle (Gabriel versus Alfie, who will she choose?), Camille’s pregnancy, her chaotic professional life and that tendency to overshare via social media, something tells us it won’t be smooth sailing ahead for our favourite ********* abroad. This season is split into two parts, with the second coming September 12. It’s going to be a wild ride.
