Η Ντάρζα Βαρφολομέεφ κατέκτησε το χρυσό μετάλλιο στον τελικό σύνθετου ατομικού της ρυθμικής γυμναστικής, γίνοντας η πρώτη αθλήτρια από τη Γερμανία που αναδείχθηκε πρωταθλήτρια. Ήταν επίσης η πρώτη φορά μετά από πολλά χρόνια που η Γερμανία κέρδισε μετάλλιο στη ρυθμική γυμναστική. Η Βαρφολομέεφ συγκέντρωσε 142.850 βαθμούς στο σύνολο, ενώ ήταν 2.250 μπροστά από την δεύτερη. Αν και οι φίλαθλοι ξεκίνησαν τον πανηγυρισμό, η νεαρή αθλήτρια δεν επέδειξε ενθουσιασμό αμέσως αλλά προτίμησε να πάει να παρηγορήσει τη συμπατριώτισσά της που κατέκτησε την τρίτη θέση. Με αυτήν τη νίκη, η Ντάρζα Βαρφολομέεφ έγραψε ιστορία στη γερμανική ρυθμική γυμναστική και κέρδισε τον σεβασμό του κοινού και των αθλητών.
