Το βράδυ της Παρασκευής, η ισραηλινή αεροπορία στόχευσε ένα αυτοκίνητο στα όρια της πόλης-λιμανιού Σιδώνας του Λιβάνου, σκοτώνοντας τον αξιωματούχο της Χαμάς Samer al-Hajj και ένα άλλο μέλος της οργάνωσης. Ο αλ-Hajj ήταν υπεύθυνος για την ασφάλεια στον παλαιστινιακό προσφυγικό καταυλισμό Ain al-Hilweh. Ο στόχος της επίθεσης ήταν ο ίδιος ο al-Hajj, σύμφωνα με αναφορές από ισραηλινές και λιβανές πηγές. Το Ισραήλ πραγματοποιεί επιδρομές εναντίον στελεχών της Χεζμπολάχ και άλλων οργανώσεων που εκτοξεύουν ρουκέτες εναντίον αυτού. Οι επιδρομές αυτές εντάσσονται στο πλαίσιο μιας μακροχρόνιας σύγκρουσης μεταξύ του Ισραήλ και των οργανώσεων που δραστηριοποιούνται στο Λίβανο.
