Ο Παύλος Κοντίδης κατάφερε να κερδίσει το πρώτο ολυμπιακό μετάλλιο για την Κύπρο στον αγώνα ILCA 7 ιστιοπλοΐας στο Παρίσι. Με 56 βαθμούς ποινής, ο 34χρονος αθλητής τερμάτισε στη δεύτερη θέση, κερδίζοντας το ασημένιο μετάλλιο. Αυτή ήταν η δεύτερη φορά που ο Κοντίδης κατάφερε να κερδίσει ολυμπιακό μετάλλιο, αφού είχε αποσπάσει ασημένιο στο Λονδίνο το 2012 στην κατηγορία Laser. Ο μεταλλίας χρυσός ήταν ο Ματ Γουέρν από την Αυστραλία, ενώ την τρίτη θέση πήρε ο Στέφανο Πεσκιέρα από το Περού. Η πρώτη δεκάδα περιλάμβανε αθλητές από διάφορες χώρες, με τον Κοντίδη να ξεχωρίζει για την υψηλή του επίδοση και την ιστορική στιγμή που πρόσφερε στην Κύπρο.
