7NEWS finance guru Graeme Butler has given his money-saving hacks on how to cut down your water bill this summer.

Speaking on his Butler’s Budget Busters segment this week, he explained that “the key to saving is simple,” and it all begins with removing the grass and paving from your verge or garden.

Butler talks to sustainability experts to confirm that turning “your front verge or garden into a water and money saving sanctuary” is possible with “mulch and native plants”.

Water Corporation employee Damien Postma confirmed that “now is the time to do it” as we are in “the cooler months before summer”.

Your new garden is easier to plant than ever, with 23 councils across WA providing “tube stock for free or as little as a dollar” as part of the Waterwise Greening Scheme.

Last year, Water Corp funded the Waterwise Greening Scheme, providing West Aussies with over 116,000 plants.

The City of Stirling’s sustainability officer, Rebecca Thomas, said that participating councils not only provide native plants and mulch but also “tips and tricks to establish a native garden.”

Mr Postma said that “more than 40 per cent of our water is used in our garden,” but with Butler’s money-saving hack, this weekend project could provide you with “savings for years”.
