For many people, the prospect of air travel is an exciting one, heralding the start of a holiday or a reunion with family or friends. For Perth Hills resident Mel Rea, the prospect of flying fills her with dread and is an event that requires extensive planning, considerable time and expense.

For the last four years, Mel has been a wheelchair user following a spinal cord injury. Her previous life as an able-bodied traveller means she knows what air travel can and should be like. Her experience as a passenger with a disability is a very different one, however, despite the best intentions of airport and airline staff.
