WAFL 2024: East Perth Sandover Medal fancy Angus Schumacher faces nervous wait after sling tackle report

East Perth star Angus Schumacher faces a nervous wait to find out if his Sandover Medal hopes are still alive after being reported for a sling tackle in the Royals’ win over South Fremantle.

Schumacher was arguably best-on-ground in the 12.10 (82) to 6.7 (43) victory at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday afternoon, finishing with 23 disposals, nine tackles and five inside 50s.

It will likely see Schumacher earn Sandover votes but it could be redundant if he is suspended for a sling tackle on Bulldogs’ debutant Lewis Rayson in the third quarter.

The 25-year-old is a proven vote-getter, finishing third last year to teammate and captain Hamish Brayshaw with 18 votes.

Schumacher has finished in the top-10 of the past two count, polling 16 votes in 2022 and 10 votes in only 13 games in 2021.

The experienced midfielder would be one of the favourites for this year’s medal if he doesn’t get suspended or picked up in the mid-season draft, having been on the radar of some clubs last year.

Last year Schumacher averaged 26 disposals and kicked 10 goals, while he averaged a career-high 28 disposals the year in 2022.

It comes on a weekend where several players have been reported for incidents.

Claremont captain Declan Mountford was put in the umpire’s book for allegedly kicking Sandover medallist Aaron ****** in West Perth’s win over the Tigers on Thursday night.

West Coast listed defenders Alex Witherden and Harry Edwards are also on report for separate incidents with Swan Districts wingman Jesse Turner.
