Archaeologists Discovered a 2,700-Year-Old Royal Tomb Filled With 150 Astounding Treasures

Archaeologists discovered a 7th century BC tomb rife with artifacts that once belonged to Picene aristocrats.

Among the finds were ******** of tow chariots, finely decorated containers, bronze objects, and more.

A 2018 find in the region uncovered the existence of the “Prince of Corinaldo,” leading the exploration of the necropolis in the town of Nevola.

contained a treasure trove of over 150 ancient artifacts, including the remnants of two chariots, in addition to the ******** of its long-deceased occupant.

roughly 12 feet by 7 feet within a circular 100-foot-diameter pit. The discovery was part of The University of Bologna’s ArcheoNevola project, which started in 2017 and consists of the excavation of the necropolis in the town of Nevola. The highlight of the excavation so far is a tomb found in 2018 that experts believe to be that of a Picene prince. Now, a tomb-full of more than 150 belongings of Picene aristocracy have been added to the discovery.

The latest find really takes a step forward with both the grave and the artifacts, most significant, the statement says, that of a two-wheeled wagon Among the artifacts found, a “prestigious set of bronze objects,” including a helmet, a cauldron, and finely decorated containers join the ******** of the chariots as the most significant, according to the statement.

“The set of artifacts clearly resembles the sphere of the banquet,” the statement said, “with a beam of spears and an iron axe for processing the meats and a succulent vessel for holding and serving food and drinks and treats the celebrated character as a figure of the highest level.”

Other items within the artifact haul include items likely brought in from the ******* man’s residence, which had ritualistic significance.

Known as a wealthy, warlike people, experts believe the Picene aristocracy of the era interacted with Etruscan civilization of the time and the items found in the pit bear that out, some with Picena origins and others from the Etruscan people. Rome eventually annexed the territory by 268 BC.

Corinaldo mayor Gianni Aloisi said that the additional finds in the Nevola necropolis further shows the importance of the area and may “allow us to get to know, and maybe rewrite, the history of our collection.”

Aloisi added that even as work continues at the site, the goal is to make the found treasures available in a museum that opens to the public.
