The boss of Australia’s largest gold miner says gigantic piles of rocks and dirt on the perimeter of the Kalgoorlie Super Pit make a $1.5 billion expansion of the iconic mining operation a no-brainer.

Northern Star Resources chief executive Stuart Tonkin says the red hot gold price has taken the value of its Kalgoorlie ore stockpile far beyond the budgeted cost of its Fimiston processing plant upgrade.
