Five shiny sights in the old steel town of Sheffield

The gateway to the gorgeous Peak District National Park, Sheffield has pleasant surprises up its sleeve both indoors and out. The centre of this South Yorkshire city is compact and walkable, while trams, trains, buses and cycle lanes open up the leafy suburbs and rustic countryside. Here are five Sheffield highlights. ARCHITECTURAL MELANGE

It may be one of England’s top university cities, but Sheffield is no Oxford or Cambridge. With its proud industrial heritage, significantly larger population (almost 600,000) and architectural mish-mash, it’s more akin in look and vibe to Birmingham and Leeds. If you’re coming to Sheffield by rail, get a panorama of the city by scaling the steps to South Street Park, which slopes east of the station. While you’re up here, check out the Park Hill housing complex. Billed as Europe’s largest heritage-listed building, it was inspired by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, with hundreds of Brutalist flats built between 1957 and 1961. Sporting a 21st-century upgrade, the estate now flaunts colourful panels to soften the grey concrete facades, with businesses and cafes at street level. Down in Sheffield’s hodge-podge central core, you’ll stroll through vestiges of its medieval street plan, past post-war eyesores and handsome Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Particularly photogenic is Sheffield Town Hall, designed in Renaissance Revival style at the end of the 19th century. It’s nicely complemented by the Peace Gardens, a landscaped public space with lawns, flower beds, cascades and fountains. If the weather’s not to your liking, shelter inside the neighbouring Winter Garden, a 70m-long glazed temperate glasshouse supported by striking curved larch beams. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003 and has over 2500 plants, including pines from Australia’s Norfolk Island.
