Ο ηγέτης της Χαμάς, Ισμαήλ Χανίγια, δολοφονήθηκε στην Τεχεράνη από έναν πύραυλο μικρής ακτίνας δράσης. Οι Φρουροί της Επανάστασης του Ιράν ανέφεραν ότι η εκδίκηση θα είναι “σφοδρή” και κατηγόρησαν το Ισραήλ για το θάνατο του Χανίγια. Το Ισραήλ φέρεται να βρίσκεται πίσω από την επίθεση, αν και δεν έχει αναλάβει επίσημα την ευθύνη. Υπάρχουν πολλά σενάρια για τον τρόπο εκτέλεσης της δολοφονίας, με μέσα ενημέρωσης να αναφέρουν ότι ενδέχεται να πρόκειται για έξυπνη βόμβα που φυτεύτηκε σε στρατιωτικό ξενώνα όπου διέμενε ο Χανίγια. Η βόμβα είχε τοποθετηθεί πριν από περίπου δύο μήνες στον ξενώνα, που προστατεύεται από το Σώμα των Φρουρών της Επανάστασης. Η δολοφονία αναμένεται να εξελιχθεί σε νέα επικίνδυνη σύρραξη στην περιοχή.
