Local streets in Adrian will reopen to traffic after Friday morning train derailment

— All local streets within the east side of Adrian should be open to traffic as normal within the next hour now that developments are progressing after a train derailed from its tracks during the morning hours Friday, Aug. 2.

In a news release issued by the city of Adrian Friday morning, a train derailed from its tracks at approximately 8 a.m. near Gulf Street and Lowe Avenue on the east side of Adrian. Emergency responders at the scene determined one of the cars was leaking pressurized carbon dioxide, but it was described as a non-threat to the community.

Because of the derailment and the proximity of the carbon dioxide car, East Beecher Street has been closed to traffic just east of Gulf Street, and East Maumee Street also has been closed just east of Gulf Street. These closures are expected to be lifted this evening, the city said.

“The CO2 tank car has been righted and is venting as normal,” the city said in an updated news release Friday evening.

Railroad crews are asking residents to stay out of the area, if possible, the city communicated, as they will have crews and trucks moving throughout the derailment area all weekend.

Adrian police and ***** agencies are breaking down operations “as any potential hazard to the public has been mitigated,” the city said.

“Anyone who may have evacuated their homes may return.”
