Ο Ρούντι Φερνάντεθ, σε ηλικία 38 ετών, αποσϕράγισε την καριέρα του με την απόφαση να αποσυρθεί μετά από τον αποκλεισμό της Εθνικής Ισπανίας στο Ολυμπιακό τουρνουά. Η ισπανική ομοσπονδία μπάσκετ αποχαιρέτησε τον φημισμένο παίκτη που δεν κατάφερε να σκοράρει στον τελευταίο του αγώνα εναντίον του Καναδά. Ο Φερνάντεθ είχε συμμετοχή σε 266 ματς με την Εθνική, κατακτώντας 11 μετάλλια και 6 τίτλους. Αν και επιθυμούσε να συνεχίσει στην εθνική ομάδα της χώρας του στην συνέχεια του τουρνουά, τελικά το αποτύχημα αποτέλεσε τον τελευταίο χαρακτηριστικό σταθμό της καριέρας του. Με μία πλούσια πορεία σε διοργανώσεις και τίτλους, ο Φερνάντεθ αποχαιρέτησε την εθνική ομάδα με την επισημοποίηση της απόσυρσής του.
