Η έρευνα που δημοσιεύτηκε στο Cell Host & Microbe ανέδειξε τη σχέση μεταξύ ενός βακτηρίου με την παχυσαρκία, το Megamonas. Οι ερευνητές από το Ruijin Hospital BGI Research και το BGI Genomics Institute of Intelligent Medical Research (IIMR) ανέλυσαν δείγματα κοπράνων από 1.005 ανθρώπους και ανακάλυψαν ότι το Megamonas αποδομεί την εντερική μυο-ινοσιτόλη, ενισχύει την απορρόφηση λιπιδίων και συνδέεται με την παχυσαρκία. Η ανισορροπία στη μικροβιακή κοινότητα των εντέρων έχει σημαντική επίδραση στην παχυσαρκία, ειδικά σε ανθρώπους χαμηλού γενετικού κινδύνου. Η παρουσία του Megamonas κυριαρχεί στα έντερα των παχύσαρκων και συνδυασμένη με παράγοντες κινδύνου αυξάνει την πιθανότητα παχυσαρκίας.
