Storms leave 17,000-plus homes, businesses without power in Salina, about 32,000 in Topeka

High winds from severe thunderstorms sweeping eastward across north-central into northeast Kansas late Wednesday left tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power.

The Evergy electrical utility reported at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday that 17,746 homes and businesses were without electrical power in the Salina area as a result of 212 outages, 32,314 homes and businesses were without power in the Topeka area as a result of 245 outages and 36,631 homes and businesses were without power as a result of 311 outages in the Kansas City, Kansas, area.

High winds from a severe thunderstorm cause a large limb to fall blocking the roadway at S.E. John St. in East Topeka Wednesday night.

“This storm has produced widespread tree damage and power line damage in the cities of Lawrence and Topeka and surrounding areas,” said the website of the National Weather Service’s Topeka office.

This graphic posted just before 10 p.m. Wednesday on the power outage website maintained by the Evergy electrical utility showed that more than 50 homes and businesses were without electrical power in the areas of both Topeka and Salina.

The weather service reported wind speeds had been reported to have reached as high as 77 mph one mile east/southeast of the unincorporated community of Pauline, which is located just south of Topeka.

The weather service reported it had recorded 0.58 inches of rainfall between 9 and 11 p.m. at its office in northeast Topeka near Philip Billard Municipal Airport.
