Bazzana hits grand slam for first pro home run

*********** Travis Bazzana, last month’s No.1 draft pick, has hit a grand slam for his first professional home run.

The 21-year-old, who signed a $A13.3 million MLB contract with the Cleveland Guardians, featured in High-A Lake County’s 17-5 rout of Beloit in the Midwest League on Wednesday night.

Bazzana homered on a drive to right-centre field in the fifth innings against left-hander Caleb Wurster, a 25-year-old pitcher on the Miami Marlins farm team.

Batting leadoff, Bazzana also singled, walked twice and scored three runs in the completion of a game suspended because of wet grounds on Tuesday night.

After previously playing for Oregon State, Bazzana hit an RBI grounder Friday in his professional debut against Great Lakes.

The 2024 Pac-12 Player of the Year, the left-hander batted .407 with 28 homers and 66 RBIs for the Beavers, who advanced to a super regional as the No.15 national seed before losing a three-game series at second-seeded Kentucky.

Bazzana was the first *********** to be selected with the No.1 overall pick. He also set an Oregon State single-season record by scoring 84 runs and slugging .911 in 2024.

He stole 16 bases and boasted a .568 on-base percentage last season, earning consensus first-team All-America status.
