Here’s the latest on the ******* in Beirut.

The ******** military said it had ******* a senior Hezbollah commander whom it targeted on Tuesday evening in Beirut, a claim that was not immediately confirmed or denied by Hezbollah or Lebanese officials.

******** fighter jets carried out an airstrike on Tuesday, a military spokesman said, in retaliation for an ******** that ******* 12 children and teenagers in the ********-controlled Golan Heights over the weekend.

The strike, which hit a residential building in a southern suburb of Beirut controlled by Hezbollah, ******* at least three people, including a woman and two children, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The ******* fueled Western concerns that *******’s long-running conflict with the powerful Lebanese militia could escalate further.

It was the second time during the war that the ******** military had hit a target in or near Lebanon’s capital, after the ******** of a senior ****** leader in Beirut in January.

The ******** military spokesman, Daniel Hagari, wrote on social media that the commander, Fuad Shukr, had directed Hezbollah’s campaign of near-daily rocket and drone barrages against ******* since the ******-led ******** on Oct. 7. He said Mr. Shukr, a close confidant of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, was similarly responsible for the strike on the village of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights.

Hezbollah has not commented on the status of Mr. Shukr.

The ********** in Beirut came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that there would be a “severe” response for the Golan Heights *******, which hit a field where young people were playing soccer. ******* blamed Hezbollah, and the group denied responsibility for the ********, which landed in the Druse ***** village of Majdal Shams. Western officials had urged ******* to exercise restraint in its response.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said in a statement that Tuesday’s ******* ******* at least three people — a woman and two children — and that officials were still searching the rubble for other victims. The statement did not address whether the ******* had ******* Mr. Shukr as *******’s military has claimed.

Here’s what else to know:

Hezbollah’s rocket and drone assaults into ******* have drawn frequent ******** military responses, and the cross-border volleys have forced tens of thousands of people from their homes. The hostilities have displaced about 60,000 Israelis and 100,000 Lebanese in the region.

Both ******* and Hezbollah have for months argued that they are exercising restraint and that they do not seek a full-fledged war, preferring a diplomatic solution. Many Western nations, including ******* States, have repeatedly called again for the parties to avoid escalation. Hezbollah has said it will only stop its attacks if there is a cease-***** between ******* and ****** in Gaza. “We do not believe that an all-out war is inevitable,” the White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, told reporters on Tuesday. “We believe that it can still be avoided.”

Mr. Shukr was said to be a close adviser to the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and someone wanted by the U.S. government for his role in a 1983 ******** ******* that ******* roughly 300 ********* and French soldiers in Beirut.

******** analysts said Hezbollah was most likely aiming at a nearby army base on Mount Hermon and did not intentionally target the village, which has often been the site of fighting. But the group’s use of inaccurate rockets in an area dotted with civilian communities could lead to the kind of unintended consequence that risk sparking an all-out war, they said.

Since the strike on Majdal Shams on Saturday, there have been continued exchanges across the border, but they have seemed to fall within the bounds of the routine ****-for-tat of the past few months. On Tuesday, dozens of projectiles were fired from Lebanon toward northern *******, ******** one ******** civilian in the border community of Kibbutz HaGoshrim, the ******** military said. Hezbollah took responsibility for ******* rockets and drones at *******, including at a town near HaGoshrim. The ******** military said it targeted the sources of ***** on *******.
