Paris Olympics 2024: Aussies suffers shock semifinals loss to Canada in Rugby 7s

Australia has suffered a heartbreaking loss in the rugby 7s semifinal, going down in a nine-point upset against Canada.

The Aussies were favourites to win the match, and were on top in the first half.

However, a couple of errors in the second allowed their opponents to take charge.

The Canadians were able to rally and use their smarts to wind down the clock when they took the lead.

They were able to maintain possession for the majority of the second half, giving Australia no time to mount offence.

The loss means Australia will go head-to-head with team USA for a shot at bronze, while Canada will face New Zealand in the gold medal match.

Australia got off to the perfect start, with Maddi Levi getting involved in the action early.

The 22-year-old scored her 12th try for the tournament, fending off Charity Williams to draw first blood for the Aussies.

She was backed up by Sariah ***** shortly after, to stretch the lead to 12 points.

Canada were on the ropes with the Aussies pressing, but a lapse prior to half time saw Williams score for Canada to reduce the margin back to five.

The Canadians were out early, but a brilliant run-down tackle from Bienne Terita stopped a certain try.

However, an offside penalty was awarded to Canada, who soon after took the lead through Asia Hogan-Rochester.

With the pressure on and time ticking away, Teagan Levi made an error, a knock on resulting in a turnover.

The ball was well and truly in Canada’s half, and they were able to hold possession and take valuable time off the clock.

Levi attempted to make amends with a strong tackle on Piper Logan, but it was in vain as the try was awarded.

With a minute to go, the nine-point deficit was too great, as Canada booked their ticket to the gold medal match.

Australia had qualified for the semifinal after their comprehensive 40-7 win over Ireland on day three.

The side was dominant leading into the match on day four, having an average winning margin of 24.5.

The Aussies will be looking to secure bronze at 1am AWST on Wednesday.
