Man arrested after attempting to elude police by hiding in the Catawba River

BELMONT, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man is in custody after he tried to flee by hiding in the Catawba River.

Police say around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Belmont officers responded to a residence in Belmont attempting to locate 47-year-old Travis Kirby.

Kirby had outstanding felony ***** warrants, multiple domestic ********* protection order violations and was known to be armed and dangerous.

As officers approached, Kirby fled from officers on foot.

A Belmont K9 tracked Kirby, who was found trying to hide in the Catawba River.

Marine units were requested to retrieve Kirby from the river and was taken into custody.

According to the Gaston County Sheriff’s Office, he is being held at the Gaston County Jail on a $35,000 secured bond.

Mount Holly Police Department, Gaston County Police, Gaston County Sheriff’s Office and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police all assisted in apprehending Kirby.
