Η κατάκτηση ενός χρυσού ολυμπιακού μεταλλίου αποτελεί το αποκορύφωμα στην καριέρα ενός αθλητή. Ωστόσο, παρά την αξία του χρυσού, τα ολυμπιακά μετάλλια κατασκευάζονται κυρίως από άλλα μέταλλα, με το χρυσό μέρος να αποτελείται μόνο από ένα μικρό ποσοστό χρυσού. Κατά τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του 2024 στο Παρίσι, ένα χρυσό μετάλλιο πρέπει να περιέχει τουλάχιστον 92,5% ασήμι και μόλις έξι γραμμάρια χρυσού. Τιμές έρχονται να δώσουν μια ιδέα για τη σχετική αξία των μεταλλίων, με τα χρυσά να υπολογίζονται σε εκατοντάδες ευρώ, τα ασημένια με λιγότερα χρήματα και τα χάλκινα ακόμα και με μόλις ελάχιστα χρήματα. Παρόλα αυτά, ιστορικά μετάλλια έχουν πουληθεί για πολύ μεγάλα ποσά, ανεβάζοντας την αξία τους πέραν της υλικής αξίας τους.
