Vegas ends seven-year PGA Tour victory drought

Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas has birdied the final ***** to end a seven-year victory drought and claim his fourth PGA Tour title in the 3M Open in Minnesota.

Vegas two-putted from 96 feet on the par-five 18th at TPC Twin Cities to complete a final round of 70 and finish 17 under par, a shot ahead of fast-finishing ********* Max Greyserman.

The 39-year-old Vegas, who is competing on a medical exemption after an elbow injury limited him to seven starts last season, said: “Every win is special, especially coming back from two surgeries.

“It was a very hard day for me today, I didn’t feel 100 per cent. It took a lot but it really makes a win super special, especially having my little ones out here.”

Greyserman had set the clubhouse target after a flawless closing 63, his eighth birdie of the day on the 18th coming after a brilliant approach over the water following a pulled drive.

“We’re all out here to win golf tournaments and get trophies,” said the 29-year-old ********* who was playing only his 22nd PGA Tour event.

“I felt it was worth the risk and honestly to other people it seemed liked a hard shot, but in the moment it wasn’t that hard of a shot. You hit a lot of shots in the trees in the course of your life, it was just another one.”

Matt Kuchar (71) and Maverick McNealy (70) shared third place on 15 under par, with Canada’s Taylor Pendrith (67) another shot back in fifth.

Sahith Theegala (70) had a chance on the last *****, but after hitting his second shot into the water he ended with a bogey and finished in a three-way tie for sixth at 13 under, along with Kurt Kitayama (66) and Patrick Fishburn (70).

Australia’s Cam Davis went into the final round tied fifth but stumbled late as he dropped four shots in his last eight holes, including a double bogey at the last, to ****** 72 and share 19th place at 10 under.

Fellow Aussie Aaron Baddley had a closing 74 to be be tied 53rd at four under.
