Patriotic crowd dons green and gold to cheer on Aussie Olympians at Yagan Square

Families turned out in force in Perth’s Yagan Square to cheer on Aussie athletes competing in the Paris Olympics, proudly bedecked and shrouded in green and gold.

Gymnast Olivia Vivian, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said she would never forget marching out into the stadium, seeing her father and brother cheering her on, swathed in the same hues.

“It really gave me a deep appreciation for community because it takes a whole community just to get one athlete to the Olympics,” she told the crowd.

Olivia gave a tip to those aspiring to one day be part of the Games themselves.

“I really believe in having dreams and goals that are just to the moon. You know, if it’s not big enough that it scares you, it’s not big enough.

“Have that self belief.

“But of course underneath that comes the hard work and the resilience and the dedication and support you need.”

Eight-year-old Willow and her brother Jack, 5, were revved up after taking part in their own mini-Olympics at home and also at school.

“I really like the watersports,” Willow said, adding she’d be gunning for the whole *********** team.

“Everyone’s excited for the Olympics,” mum Claudia said.

“I’m sports **** and I just like to get them involved with it too.”

Olivia tipped that the time had come for Perth’s own Nina Kennedy to win top spot in pole vaulting after taking the national record.

“I’m really like egging her on for that gold medal – I’ll be totally behind our WA girl there.”
