Paris Olympics 2024: WA athletes in action on Day one, featuring Zac Incerti, Doup Reath, Matt Ebden and more

Zac Incerti (swimming)

Broome product Zac Incerti will look to make an early splash for Australia when he dives off the blocks in arguably the premier swimming race at the games – the 4x100m freestyle relay.

The 28-year-old relay specialist played a key hand in Australia’s bronze in Tokyo three years ago, swimming the second-fastest split on their way to snagging a bronze medal.

An Aquinas College graduate, Incerti will ***** off the blocks to help his fellow countrymen in their first heat of the games.

The men’s 4x100m freestyle relay is set to start at 6.26pm.

Duop Reath (basketball)

Basketballer Duop Reath is set to begin his Olympics campaign with the Boomers when they take on the world No.2 Spain.

After making history in Tokyo with their team’s first-ever medal where they won, the 206cm centre will again play a key role in the post for the green and gold.

Reath was born in South Sudan before moving to Brisbane at the age of nine and now plays for Portland Trailblazers in the NBA.

The Boomers will lock horns with the Spaniards at 5pm.

Matt Ebden (tennis)

Wiry tennis veteran Matt Ebden will face one of the toughest tasks in his first-round singles match when he locks horns with former world No.1 and record Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

At 36 years old and a former world No.1 ranked doubles player, Ebden will have no teammates to rely on when he is thrown into the baptism of ***** with “The Joker”, who took out Rolland Garros just over a year ago.

The South ********-born right-hander’s best result at Roland Garros was a semifinal in doubles earlier this year but has not ventured past the first round in his singles career.

He is also a doubles partner at this Olympics with fellow West Aussie John Peers.

Ebden will play game two on Court Philippe-Chatrier with the first match starting at 6pm.

Maddison Keeney (diving)

Maddison Keeney will give Australia an early medal chance on the opening day in the 3m synchronised diving event.

Competing alongside decade-long teammate Anabelle Smith, the 28-year-old at her second Olympics is looking to improve on the bronze medal they won in this very event back in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

The first jumpers will springboard at 5pm.

Tom Wickham, Jake Harvie and Aran Zalewski (hockey)

The Kookaburras will be hoping to convert their red-hot run of form into Olympic gold, starting with a victory over Argentina on Saturday.

As always, the Kookaburras will be an unbackable favourite to take out gold this year, especially after claiming the FIH Pro League Season 5 last month.

However, the question ******** whether they can live up to the lofty bill they set for themselves.

Jake Harvie, from Dardanup in the South West, boasts an impressive *********** hockey background as he makes his debut.

The 26-year-old, who is a contender for the FIH Rising Star Award given to the top young field hockey player of the year, is also the grandson of three-time Olympian Gordon Pearce.

Tom Wickham makes his second appearance following his silver medal efforts in Tokyo and this will be Aran Zalewski’s third consecutive appearance.

Kookaburra’s match with Argentina starts at 7.15pm.

Joshua Yong (swimming)

Joshua Yong’s journey to the Olympics is far from conventional, but after qualifying for the Paris games by the skin of his teeth the rising breaststroker will get his first taste of the Olympics on Saturday.

The 23-year-old, who grew up in Brunei and spent his summer holidays in Melbourne, clocked a personal best of 59.48sec in his qualifiers, narrowly beating the Olympic qualifying mark by 0.01sec.

The heats for the 100m breaststroke begin at 5.30pm.
