Collins Class submarine maintenance deal secures 400 jobs for WA’s shipbuilding industry

Hundreds of WA shipbuilding jobs have been secured after the Federal Government inked a new multi-billion submarine maintenance deal.

The Federal Government will on Saturday announce a fresh four-year contract with ASC for the sustainment of the fleet of Collins Class submarines.

The contract — valued at more than $2.2 billion — will support 400 jobs at WA’s Henderson Shipyard and a further 1100 jobs at Osborne in South Australia.

“This new contract further ensures these workers have certainty in Australia’s national naval shipbuilding and sustainment enterprise and helps to grow the workforce required to build and sustain Australia’s future nuclear-powered submarines,” Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy said.

The deal is part of a $4 billion to $5 billion investment from the Federal Government to keep the Collins Class submarines running into the 2040s, helping to smooth the transition to nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS pact.

WA will be a major player in AUKUS, with the first rotations of US and ***-built nuclear-powered submarines due to start rotating through Perth from 2027.

The announcement of the Collins Class maintenance deal is another shot in the arm for WA’s shipbuilding industry, coming just days after Mr Conroy confirmed Austal Ships in Henderson would fast-track construction of 18 medium land craft vessels for the Army.

The $2 billion project — which is expected to create 1100 direct jobs, is now forecast to deliver the first landing craft in 2026, two years ahead of schedule.

It also caps off a week in which defence leaders, including the Navy chiefs of Australia, the *** and the US, descended on Perth for the 2024 Indian Ocean conference.

In an interview with The West, WA Defence Industry Minister Paul Papalia heralded the event as the State’s largest-ever defence industry gathering.
