Salman Rushdie attacker charged with supporting militant group Hezbollah

The man accused of stabbing writer Sir Salman Rushdie in 2022 in New York now faces a new charge of supporting a ********** group.

Hadi Matar has been charged with providing material support to the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah, according to an indictment unsealed on Wednesday.

The federal charges come weeks after Mr Matar rejected an offer from prosecutors that would have sentenced him to prison for a shorter ******* of time if he pleaded guilty.

Mr Matar’s lawyer, Nathaniel Barone, told the BBC his client plans to plead not guilty to the new charges.
