Eagles star Tom Barrass opens up on Cam McCarthy passing and obscure hobbies in honest interview on Dyl and Friends

West Coast Eagles star Tom Barrass has opened up on life away from the game and the tragic passing of his close friend Cam McCarthy in a candid interview with former AFL player Dylan Buckley.

Appearing on Buckley’s podcast Dyl & Friends, the father-of-two reflected on the profound impacts of loss and the silver linings that emerge from tragedy.

“It’s been difficult,” Barrass admitted speaking on the loss of his dad and McCarthy.

“My father passing, that’s probably a few years ago and that’s something that I feel more so than say Cam, that I’ve mourned and accepted.”

“When you’re celebrating a life, whether it be Cam or whether it be your father, I certainly got the positive experience of spending some time with his friends and with our family broadly, and some of his older friends, and learning about who that person actually is.”

“There were some really positive and amazing things, and amazing learnings to come out of it.”

Speaking on fatherhood, the defender suggested his kids would only ever understand a part of him, which was something his father’s passing had taught him.

“I look at my sons now and I just know; as much as I love them, they’ll never really understand who I am.

“Because they weren’t with me for the first 28 years of my life.”

Turning his focus back to McCarthy, he admitted to finding his mate’s ********** ****** “really difficult and really shocking”, saying he was the “life of the party”.

“We had a very special relationship and I loved him very much. So did lots of Perth.

“But in terms of mourning and understanding it, that one has been the hardest for me recently for sure.”

Touching on his experience with recently departed coach Adam Simpson, Barrass labelled his former leader a “lovely man” and “role model” who instilled his values at the club upon his arrival in 2014.

“He came into our club 12 years ago, stuck his hand up and said, ’Hi, I’m Adam. These are my values.’ And that gave me a sort of framework to work off when I was a young ****.

“We’re gonna miss having him around the club.”

Barrass’ entry into the AFL came at a time when club legends Dean Cox, Darren Glass and Matt Priddis were driving training standards.

But away from the game, Barrass revealed despite being a poor student, he has a burgeoning interest in understanding the world around him and his sense of identity outside of being a footy player.

His list of academic pursuits rival those of Stephen Hawking and Robert J. Oppenheimer.

Studying a major in Chemistry and Philosophy at UWA, the scholar is said to have interests in neuroscience, classical physics, quantum mechanics, epistemology, philosophy, and metaphysics.

Told to stick with footy by his mother, the Perth man considered fallback careers in engineering or medicine should his initial ventures into professional football fall through.

As COVID began affecting how AFL clubs travelled and operated, Barrass was able to study philosophy online to avoid being around other university students under the advice of the League.

Describing his ideological studies as an attempt to escape some form of “existential crisis”, the defender added he had also spent time in Sri Lanka studying Buddhism.
