Geraldton represented in over-35s national softball championships, with WA men taking gold and women debuting

Some of Geraldton’s best softballers have had an impact at the over-35s national championships, with three taking home gold after the WA men’s team claimed victory.

Geraldton’s Dion Harrison, Kurt Mead, and Paul Valenti played pivotal roles in the WA men’s team, who proved too strong throughout the tournament.

The side remained undefeated, culminating in a resounding 12-0 victory over Queensland in the Grand Final, making it back-to-back titles.

After the match, Harrison, the side’s second baseman, said he felt elation from the win, but was already looking to the future.

“Stoked we had the perfect tournament winning all 12 games,” he said.

“Amazing feeling again to go back to back, looking forward to next year already.”

Mead, who played shortstop, echoed the sentiment, emphasising the value of perseverance.

“Never too old to still follow your dreams,” he said.

“Hard work really does pay off, and this shows with the results that we were able to achieve as a team.”

Meanwhile, Geraldton’s Stacey Derschow and Kristi March represented the WA women’s over-35s in the side’s first tournament.

Although they were unable to register a win, March said it was an honour to represent her state.

““Being able to compete in WA’s very first ever over 35’s women’s state team at one of the highest levels was a privilege and wonderful experience,” she said.

“Some days were mentally and physically challenging, but it’s provided me with personal goals to work on for the next 12 months.

“I’m looking forward to trying out again in 2025 and seeing what next year brings.”
