List shows top cities in the U.S. for people to move to. Where does Jacksonville fall?

A new study shows moving to Florida is still a popular choice, but the most desirable cities in the state have shifted.

The most popular big city for incoming residents was Orlando, followed by Charlotte, North Carolina; Tampa; San Antonio; and Houston.

Orlando had about 160 moves into the city for every 100 moving out, the report said.

Behind Jacksonville were Las Vegas; New York; Dallas; and Portland, Oregon, respectively.

Among cities of all sizes, Ocala ranked as the top for incoming residents in early 2024 with the highest inflow-to-outflow ratio, the report said.

The report described Ocala as affordable and offering a “quiet lifestyle and growing cultural options.”

Similarly, other small cities in the South fared well on the report, including Cary, North Carolina, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which were just behind Ocala.

Although Florida wasn’t among the top 10 states for its move-in-move-out ratio at the time of the report — ranking at No. 17 — it still had a high share of cities in the top 10 of both the large city list and the overall list.

Florida cities made up 20% of the top 10 move-to cities nationwide so far this year and ranked third for net in-migration, behind Texas and North Carolina.

Florida and Tennessee, which have seen significant increases in population since 2020, also had two of the most exit-heavy cities.

Cities that saw the highest number of exits so far were San Bernardino, California; Tallahassee; Oakland, California; Memphis, Tennessee; and San Jose, California, respectively.
