Cook and Albanese governments launch tender for WA renewable energy supply

The State and Federal governments are hoping a new tender system will firm up WA’s network of wind and solar power, as well as grow the pipeline of future projects.

On Monday the first Capacity Investment Scheme tender in WA opened for registrations on the *********** Energy Market Operator’s website, targeting 2000 megawatt hours of dispatchable capacity in WA’s wholesale electricity market.

This would be enough energy to power approximately 450,000 homes.

The Scheme falls under the Albanese government’s plan to bring online 32 gigawatts of renewable generation and storage in Australia by 2030.

The government is underwriting a minimum 6.5 terawatt hours of new wind and solar projects in WA, as well as 1.1 gigawatts of new storage.

Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the tender launch marked an “important day for Western Australia”.

“Through our renewable energy transformation agreement (with the WA government) we’re collaborating to lower the remaining obstacles to delivery of energy infrastructure, and ensuring progress continues seamlessly across jurisdictions,” he said.

“The Albanese government’s reliable renewables plan is the only plan backed by experts to deliver the cheap, reliable and resilient energy system that families and businesses deserve.

“This is in sharp contrast to Peter Dutton’s anti-renewables nuclear fantasy which ******** uncosted and unexplained.”

WA Energy and Environment Minister Reece Whitby also lauded the Scheme.

“The Cook Labor government is already investing more than $5 billion in new solar, wind and battery developments, with the Capacity Investment Scheme set to further bolster Western Australia’s decarbonisation efforts,” he said.

“The procurement of additional storage will be critical for firming wind and solar power during peak demand, complementing existing public and private investment in big batteries in Collie and Kwinana.

“We want to continue providing WA households and businesses with clean, reliable, and affordable power.”
