Homes evacuated for second night after arrest

Residents on a Derbyshire street have spent a second night unable to return to their homes after they were evacuated on Friday night.

Police said searches were carried out at a house in Kingsley Avenue, Chesterfield, following an ******** on Derby Road in the town at about 00:25 BST on Friday.

A man has been arrested in connection with the ******** and ******** in police custody.

On Friday, officers closed a section of Kingsley Avenue between ******* Street and Burns Road.

Three homes were initially evacuated before residents from a further 32 properties were told to leave.

In an update at 21:00 on Saturday, the local policing team said: “The cordon will remain in place overnight and into tomorrow.

“All those evacuated have been contacted and have been provided with accommodation for tonight if required.

“While searches continue and the investigation is ongoing there is no current risk to the public and we thank the community, in particular those affected by the evacuation, for their continued patience.”
