Co-creator of the Best PC FPS Admits 2 Reasons Behind It’s Identity and Success

Minh Le, the co-creator of Counter Strike, discussed the game’s origins and design choices in a rare interview with the Norwegian site Spillhistorie.no. Le revealed the inspirations behind the king of the competitive FPS games, stating classic arcade games such as Virtua Cop and Time Crisis, while giving a handout to iconic action films, including Heat and Air Force One. 

While this was one of the topics, Le also shared his insights into the long-term success of the game, admitting two reasons he thinks made the game into what it is today, an FPS titan.

When a player ***** they can’t respawn until the round in motion isn’t over. This has forced players into cooperative play, encouraging them to communicate and collaborate, making it a true teamwork game. 

This feature as well as the balanced design of the maps is the main reason Counter Strike is such a team-focused game. 

Another reason he is adamant about is the balanced maps. Le has stated that any of the maps in CS don’t favor any one team and provide a number of different approaches and strategies.

Players can choose to hold specific areas, flank ****** positions, or set up strategic ambushes. The balanced design forces teams to work together to control key map locations and ultimately secure victory.

Counter Strike has a number of available maps, but fan favorites still include DE_Dust, which took the competitive world by storm, to Mirage and Inferno. All of these maps, though similar are rather unique and do not promise victory if only one strategy is used. 

This is what has made the game one of the best FPS titles and there is no denying that its successor, CS2 will continue its legacy. 

Counter Strike Morphed into Counter Strike 2 to Immense Success

Counter-Strike was at first just a simple mod for the eponymous Half-Life, developed by Minh Le and his colleague and friend Jesse Cliffe. The original concept began when Le was still at the university. 

However, as the popularity of the game quickly grew, Valve hired Le and Cliffe in 2000 to work further on the game and eventually bought the rights to the game. Thanks to the vast resources of the company both in mind and money continued the evolution of the initial concept, resulting in the ever-popular 1.6 version and Global Offensive. 

The latest chapter of this success story is Counter Stike 2, which launched in late 2023. Built upon the core gameplay that made it the king of the shooters, it came with improved graphics and an anti-cheat system. 

The early success of the sequel cemented the success of the greatest first-person shooter franchise in the history of gaming.
