Arthur not down after his Leeds era opens with defeat

Brad Arthur, Leeds Rhinos’ new *********** coach, has made a losing start after his side went down 20-12 in a hard-fought English Super League encounter with Hull Kingston Rovers at Headingley.

Leeds now sit four points behind the play-offs but new boss Arthur, who has arrived on a short-term deal for the rest of this season, insists he has already seen lots of improvement since last week.

He said: “Disappointing for the players and our fans, they came out and really supported us and got behind the boys.

“We tried hard enough and our effort was good enough to win, we just lacked some detail at times which put us under pressure but it was better than last week.”

Arthur, 50, was head coach of the Parramatta Eels for 10 seasons, leading the team to the NRL Grand Final in 2022. He coached the Eels for 264 games before leaving the club in May.

He added: “They care and do want to play well and do want to get better but the effort needs to be a given, but we need to find a way to try and win games of football, that’s the priority.

“The stuff we did well today, we have to improve on next week and make sure we maintain that. If we iron some of the detail, when we learn to stay in the game and get the detail right, we will be better for it.”

Leeds, who were 12 points down inside 10 minutes in last week’s defeat to Warrington, made all the running on Saturday and Rhyse Martin’s try gave them a deserved half-time lead.

Former Leeds favourite Ryan Hall pulled Rovers level, with Mikey Lewis diving over to put the visitors in front shortly afterwards.

In a chaotic final 10 minutes, Lachie Miller put Leeds back in front but Rovers’ quality shone through in the end as Jai Whitbread and Jez Litten ran through to help the Hull side close the gap on league leaders Wigan.
