The company behind a global IT outage that brought the world to its knees in a matter of minutes calls itself a “global cybersecurity leader”.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike provides software tools to protect user data and sensitive information across several sectors including healthcare, banking, government agencies, accounting, media outlets and more.

Friday’s outage halted the operations of many of those industries — including this masthead — as organisations scrambled to pivot amid the chaos.

CrowdStrike brands itself online as a “global cybersecurity leader with an advanced cloud-native platform for protecting endpoints, cloud workloads, identities and data”.

And it claims “29,000 customers trust CrowdStrike to protect” their data.

But when thousands were hit with an outage — believed to be related to a software update — customers inundating its helpline were left with a pre-recorded phone message.

“Thanks for contacting CrowdStrike support. CrowdStrike is aware of reports of crashes on Windows … related to the Falcon sensor,” it said.

The company’s Falcon platform is meant to be the “leading endpoint protection solution that unifies the intelligence, technology and expertise needed to successfully stop ransomware”.

It claims a dataset equipped with 5 trillion events a week and “threat actor intelligence” fuels the program, allowing accurate, AI-powered prediction of cyber ******* indicators to then proactively identify and block any threats.

Last year, it was dubbed “Customers Choice” in the Gartner Peer Insights Voice of the Customer for Endpoint Protection Platform Report.

After the widespread commotion on Friday, it ******** unclear whether the company will continue to be recognised as a “dominant” endpoint solution with “superior vision”.

It took two hours for many organisations across Australia to get back up and running, with several banks affected including Bendigo Bank, ANZ, Commonwealth Bank and more.

Despite dozens of reports lodged with Downdetector that *********** government agencies including Centrelink and myGov were affected, a Services Australia spokesperson said its systems “have not been affected by the large-scale technical outage”.

National Cyber Security Coordinator Lieutenant General Michelle McGuinness said there was “no information to suggest it is a cyber security incident”.
