West Coast Eagles star Tim Kelly confirms he has been impacted by a season-long knee injury

West Coast star Tim Kelly has admitted he has been hampered by a knee injury for most of the season, but is confident his issues are in the rear-view mirror.

The 2023 John Worsfold Medallist revealed he has battled knee cartilage damage since early in the year, which contributed to him missing three games last month.

But after helping turn the tide against Brisbane in the final quarter of West Coast’s 13-point loss to the Lions, Kelly said he was confident he had got on top of the issue and was hopeful of finishing the season relatively uninhibited.

Kelly said the knee issue had surfaced early in the season, initially restricting his mid-week movements despite playing the Eagles’ first 11 games.

“Generally, I don’t really play with many ********. I’ve had a pretty good run and it’s been a little bit frustrating,” he said.

“Since about round three or four this year, I’ve been battling with a little bit of cartilage damage in my knee, a fair bit of bone stress.

“Ultimately, I was fronting up every week and playing, but from preparation point of view, it wasn’t really ideal, not really doing a ***** of a lot during the week and rolling into a game.”

However, it got to the point where the knee pain coupled with a hip flexor injury forced Kelly to the sidelines as he missed the Eagles’ home defeats to St Kilda and North Melbourne and their away loss to Essendon.

“I still fronted up and I’ve had some good games and probably by my own expectations, I have probably be a little bit below my best and certainly from a consistency point of view,” he said.

“It was important for me to have about four or five weeks off, really let my knee settle. I also had a hip flexor that was sort of initially made me stop playing.

“I’m starting to get on top of those things and starting to go into games feeling really good.”

Kelly had a strong showing against Brisbane as he gathered 29 disposals, seven inside-50s, six score involvements and a goal to go with 506m gained.

But while he admitted he was not completely out of the woods with his knee issue, he did not think he would need another rest — although he was unclear as to whether he would need post-season surgery.

“I’ll certainly speak to the medicos and take their advice. It’s not in writing or in concrete yet as to as what it looks like at the end of the year, but I’m heading into games, able to train during the week and going into games feeling really good and pulling up really good as well,” he said.

“Whereas before, it was can’t walk for a couple of days and then the knee gets a bit of flexion back and you roll out at captain’s run and feel good and then play and it’s not really ideal.”
