It was created in 2018 by Ed Hawkings, a climate scientist from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, to call on individuals, businesses, and cities around the world to highlight their local climate stripes. The stripes, known as the “Warming Stripes” on the This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up , show graphics of temperature data from the past 150 years condensed into recognizable stripes. The stripes will represent countries, regions and cities and go from blue to red, illustrating the rise in average temperatures in that location. Blue represents a cooler-than-average year, while red represents a warmer-than-average one. The rapid change to dark shades of red sends a clear message that our climate continues to warm at an unprecedented rate. For most countries, the data comes from the Berkeley Earth temperature dataset to the end of 2022, extended with ERA5-Land for 2023, while for others, the data comes from the relevant national meteorological agency. Ever since the stripes were created in 2018, they have been used globally to communicate the rapid rise in global temperatures that has been taking place in recent decades and to show how rapidly change is happening visually. This campaign is important because it connects climate warming, extreme weather events, and the health, safety, and economic impacts in your community.
