Australia, NZ send more than 100 firefighters to Canada

Australia and New Zealand will send more than 100 firefighters to Canada to help combat raging wildfires affecting the country’s northeast.

Around 9000 people have been evacuated in Labrador City and Wabush in Newfoundland and Labrador province because of the fires.

Canada is battling 575 active fires with more than 400 considered out of control, officials say.

The deployment includes experts in incident management to combat the fires, which have forced ********* authorities to evacuate more than 20,000 people so far this year.

Last year Canada suffered its worst ***** season with 180,000 square kilometres of forest burnt – an area nearly the size of Uruguay and 2.5 times more than the previous record set in 1995.

Experts attribute the ferocity of the fires to climate change.

This year western Canada suffered an unusual drought during winter with temperatures of 5.2C between December and February, the highest since records began in 1948.
