ASX200 breaches record 8000 points on US rate cut hopes

A shotgun start to this week’s trading has seen Australia’s ASX200 index cross the 8000-point threshold for the first time, fuelled by renewed hopes the US could soon start cutting interest rates.

The market surged 73 points, or 0.9 per cent, in the first few minutes after the opening bell on Monday to hit 8032.3.

All sectors were in the green, led by a 1.1 per cent gain in health care stocks and a near one per cent rise in consumer staples. The mining and energy sectors were up about 0.7 per cent.
