GWS tagger Bedford faces scrutiny over Taranto tackle

Greater Western Sydney coach Adam Kingsley will cross his fingers as Toby Bedford comes under AFL match review scrutiny over the tackle that concussed Richmond’s Tim Taranto.

Giants tagger Bedford pinned Taranto’s arms in a fourth-quarter tackle at the MCG on Sunday and the Tigers midfielder’s head hit the ground as the pair fell forward.

Taranto appeared dazed when he got up, with teammates showing immediate concern.

The 26-year-old left the field and did not return after failing a concussion test.

Kingsley was unsure when asked if he was worried Bedford could be in trouble over the incident amid the league’s crackdown around concussion.

“I haven’t watched the replay, I saw it live, but it didn’t feel like he drived him (into the ground), slung him or anything like that,” Kingsley said.

“It’s hard to say (what will come of it). I really don’t know.

“We’ll keep our fingers crossed and see how we go.”

The incident was similar to the one which led to Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield being charged with rough conduct for a tackle on Carlton’s Sam Walsh last month.

Walsh was able to continue playing, unlike Taranto, and Dangerfield eventually overturned his one-match ban at the tribunal.

The impact on Taranto means Bedford is in danger of missing the Giants’ crunch clash with fellow finals contenders Gold Coast at Engie Stadium on Saturday.

Taranto, who missed two months with a wrist injury earlier this season, has been placed in concussion protocols.

He is unavailable for the last-placed Tigers’ away game against Port Adelaide on Saturday night.

“He seems OK walking around now but it’s just a standard concussion,” Richmond coach Adem Yze said post-game.

“We’re going to obviously miss him because he was in good form again.”
