Former *********** Test cricketer Shaun Marsh to tackle Tour de Gracetown cycling challenge

One of Western Australia’s greatest-ever cricketers is swapping sports in honour of his late mother-in-law.

Shaun Marsh will swap the Gray Nicolls blades he used to carve out Test centuries for the bike as a he tackles a 100-kilometre cycling challenge in the name of a charity that is close to his family’s hearts.

Marsh and West Coast superstar Elliot Yeo are the ambassadors for this year’s Tour de Gracetown and the former *********** opener is dedicating his efforts to a cause that “means a lot”.

Marsh’s wife Rebecca’s mother Annette O’Donovan ***** of lung ******* in 2021 after a two-year battle with the ********.

“Basically last year I got involved through the Lung Foundation, with Bec’s Mum passing away with lung *******,” Shaun Marsh said.

“I knew some guys who were riding in it and then after that we thought we would get the Lung Foundation involved and raise some money for it.

“It’s something that is really close to her heart and my heart and our family’s heart and there were a lot of people down there that have had some form of ******* in their lives, whether it has been themselves or relatives or friends.

“Every one is down there to try and raise as much money as possible, to help these foundations out.”

The ride, which starts and finishes at Fraser Gallop Eastate on Saturday October 12, also raises funds for Starlight Foundation.

Marsh said cycling had become the perfect way to keep fit after his two-decade long cricket career finished after last year’s Big Bash League season.

“Once I stopped playing cricket I thought it would be a good way to keep myself fit,” he said.

“I love the social aspect of riding and waking up nice and early in the morning and getting out and getting it done. It keeps my body nice and fit.”

Marsh was due to tackle the 100km challenge at last year’s event, but a calf injury meant he instead rode 75km. This year he is in for the long-haul.

Registrations for this year’s event are open now.
