Not Watch Dogs This Time, But Ubisoft Stay Coy on the Future of a Classic Franchise, But Promise More to Come Soon

If you grew up playing video games in the 2000s, I am sure you must’ve heard of Ubisoft’s Driver franchise. The Driver games featured high-speed chases and an immersive open-world gameplay that quickly made the franchise a hit around the world.

Now, over a decade later, there’s some good news and bad news for the fans of the franchise. It seems like Ubisoft is planning to revive the franchise but the rumored live-action series based on the Driver franchise is unfortunately getting scrapped.

Ubisoft‘s Driver video game series was kicked off with 1999’s Driver and after five main installments, the series was dissolved. The fifth game, Driver: San Francisco, was an entertaining game, however, that was the end of the series.

In 2021, Ubisoft announced that they had partnered with Binge to create a live-action series based on the video game franchise. The news was indeed exciting for the fans but after 3 years of waiting, Ubisoft has told

The news about the series’ cancellation was indeed disappointing but Ubisoft announced that they have plans to revive the beloved Driver franchise after 13 years. A Ubisoft spokesperson told GameFile in the same interview,

We are actively working on other exciting projects related to the [Driver] franchise and can’t wait to share more information in the future.

The first installment in the Driver series, Driver, was initially released on the PlayStation on 25th June 1999. Its success led to further sequels, including Driver 2 in November 2000 and Driver 3 in June 2004.

The Driver franchise focused on John Tanner, an ex-racecar driver turned undercover cop, who infiltrated ****** syndicates. 2011’s Driver: San Francisco was undoubtedly the game that popularised the series among a wider audience but unfortunately, it was also the end.

Driver: San Francisco‘s story can be a little hard to digest but the concept was quite unique. It is often praised for being ahead of its time but back then it received mixed reviews.

Today, a lot of gamers wish to try out this gem once again but in 2016, the game was delisted from online stores and became unavailable for purchase due to license expiry.
