Northern California drivers face weekend closures on I-5 and I-80

(FOX40.COM) — After dealing with closures and lane adjustments along Interstate 5 and Interstate 80 in consecutive weeks, drivers in the Sacramento area will have to deal with another weekend of closures, according to Caltrans.

“Major highway construction is continuing for a $24.8 million pavement repair project and $37.7 million project adding transition lanes on Interstate 5 (I-5) in the Natomas area of Sacramento that will require daytime and nighttime lane closures again this weekend,” Caltrans said.

Closures are expected to begin Friday night around 10 p.m. and continue through early Monday morning.

Drivers are asked to seek alternate routes around the construction zone, but those who do choose to use I-5 during the closures should expect delays.

Here is a list of detours provided by Caltrans during the I-5 closures.

From southbound I-5 full closure: Take Arena Boulevard (EXIT 524) stay left onto EB Arena Blvd, make a right onto SB Truxel Road, stay right and take San Francisco 80 West on-ramp, stay right and take Los Angeles I-5 South Connector ramp (EXIT 86).

From eastbound I-80 to northbound I-5: Stay on eastbound I-80 and exit at Truxel Road. Make a left onto Truxel Road, move over to the right lane, and take the onramp to westbound I-80. Take the northbound I-5 connector towards Redding.

The project limits for the pavement repair work are from 0.2 miles south of the ********* River Bridge to Arena Boulevard. The work limits for the lane transition project are from Arena Boulevard to the Sacramento River Bridge.

will experience closures along the ramp from 9 p.m. Friday, July 12 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 15.

“Drivers looking to exit Riverside Avenue will detour westbound along I-80 to the Antelope Road exit. At the stoplight, make a left and then take the I-80 eastbound on-ramp, where they will be able to head back to the Riverside Avenue/Auburn Boulevard exit,” Caltrans said.

Another closure will be in effect for the loop on-ramp in the area, but that one isn’t coming until Friday, July 26, and will last through Monday, July 29.

The primary contractor for the work in Roseville is Ghilotti Construction Company, and according to Caltrans, the construction along I-80 is expected to be completed by fall 2024.

Once completed, the interstate will have an auxiliary lane on eastbound I-80 between State Route 65 and Rocklin Road and include a two-lane off-ramp. “A fifth lane will be constructed on westbound I-80 between Douglas Boulevard and Riverside Avenue and include reconfiguring the Douglas off-ramp from two lanes to one lane,” Caltrans added.
